GUARD on St Kilda

Work at Mullach Sgar: (1995-99)
Mullagh Sgar forms the western arm of Village Bay, with Ruaival to the south. Dolerite scree covers most of the steeper slopes, and a small, sheltered terrace lies at the base of the scree. Two phases of work were undertaken in this area: survey and excavation in the scree followed by excavation on the terrace.
Scree Structures
Several drystone structures have been observed, partly buried in the scree on Mullach Sgar. So far 11 have been identified and three excavated, although more may lie undetected. As these structures have partly collapsed and been filled in with scree, they are very difficult to identify. Excavation has revealed differences between them in construction and possibly function. The structures generally have a double wall. The outer faces, partly buried and supported by the surrounding scree, tend to be quite rough, while the inner faces are well made of neatly coursed stones. The structures have fairly well made stone floors, while the roof remains are slightly corbelled with large, flat lintel stones. Several coarse stone tools and rough stone blades have been recovered from inside the structures. Few occupation layers were found inside, and any soil inside the buildings appears to have been washed in after they fell out of use.
